The Organizing Committee and the Latvian Orienteering Federation are delighted to be the hosts for the 7th European Orienteering Championships and World Cup in Ventspils, Latvia from 25 May to 1 June 2008. We welcome all friends of orienteering in Ventspils.

Sprint qualification

At 9:00 it was the first start of the women class of the sprint qualification race. Women class was dominated by the Scandinavian runners - there were four Swedish runners, three Finnish runners and one from Denmark and Norway in the TOP 3 in all qualification runs.
Current World ranking holders Minna Kauppi (FIN) and Heli Jukkola (FIN) won their heats by good margin. The third heat was won by the 5th ranked runner Helena Jansson (SWE).

After the women start it was men's race. The gold and silver medallists from the EOC 2006 - Emil Wingstedt (SWE) and Jamie Stevenson (GBR) were best on their heats. The third heat was won by Michal Smola (CZE).
Some surprises from World top runners Jarkko Houvila (FIN) and Valentin Novikov (RUS) as wellas young Norwegian runner Olav Lundanes who missed the final, so they can keep theri medal hopes for other distances.
